I'm Joel, Cliniko Founder. Ask me anything!

Hi Everyone,

I’m Joel, Founder of Cliniko. I started Cliniko with my partner Liora in 2010! It’s come a long way since then, and far exceeded our expectations. If there’s anything you’d like to know, I’ll be happy to answer. So… ask me anything!. Things could be:

  • How we work.
  • Our plans as a company.
  • Decisions we’ve made.
  • Coffee brewing tips.
  • Anything else!

I’ll give straight and honest answers. Go for it.

Joel

This AMA will be open until Friday, 26th July 2019, 8PM AEST.

Are there any plans to expand Cliniko into the broader medical community such as specialist medical practices? To date all I have seen Cliniko in is allied health. I firmly believe there is scope there.

@grant.stowell not currently. There’s a lot to be done still for our customers we already have (and who ultimately are paying for our development), so we’re focused on them for the foreseeable future.

The only caveat, is I don’t know exactly what’s missing for specialists or others, as we haven’t even investigated. So if it wasn’t much, we’d consider. It would really need to not be much though.

@joel thanks for making this AMA - Here are my questions:

  1. When can we expect Cliniko to have better recording of Credit Payments where they can sync to Xero as credit notes.

  2. Also how long until the new stripe integration comes out exactly?

  3. Are custom fields in patient information something that will be happening soon so we can record different bits of information such as NDIS number, How the client is managed etc?.

  4. and Finally… What does it take from your guys perspective to make cliniko 2-way sync payments, invoices and changes between Xero and Cliniko, similar to the way Tradegecko and DEAR Systems do? Essentially what is involved and will this ever be supported?

Sorry @joel , it’s quite a few questions but I wanted to lay them all out in one post to make it easier.

Hi Joel. I have recently started using Cliniko a d find it good. We used PPS for years and always found it clunky and difficult to use. So Cliniko is better thsnks.
However I think th main thing missing in Cliniko is a dedicated Medical History Tab on the side bar. I think this is very important as all clinics take a medical history and need to see it easily at each appointment. I think this should link in with the medical alert buttons on the top bar. This would be amazing and make Cliniko one of the best patient management systems in my opinion. Please let me know if this can be done in the future.
Also when you go to a patients notes and say go to their invoice history when you go back it doesn’t stay on that patient you are ok so that’s a bit annoying.
When you open up the patient details with the options to book an appointment or go to notes, payment etc it would be good to have the patients date of birth on this screen too so it can be checked.
When you search for a patientvthe first line of address coming up would be helpful as you often know where a patient lives but you don’t know their date of birth and people don’t like to be asked their date of birth all the time.
Thanks for your attention to these matters and please let me know if I can give you anymore info thanks Kathy HYDE Barker

Hey There,

Thank you for starting this thread.
Are there any plans to work on optimising the calendar/online booking functions?

e.g. Only permitting specific appointment types during certain hours.
Such as, Practitioner sees emergency patients 9am - 11am, rehabilitation patients 12 - 3pm and has coaching calls 7pm - 9pm…

Many Thanks

Tabitha

@joshdcam I’ll do my best on these, but generally I don’t know time frames until something will be ready:

  1. When can we expect Cliniko to have better recording of Credit Payments where they can sync to Xero as credit notes.

We have a large task designed to improve our Xero integration in many ways (including this), however we have not begun work on it, and it’s not prioritised at the top now either. I would be surprised to see it happen this year.

  1. Also how long until the new stripe integration comes out exactly?

Assuming you’re referring to payments for online bookings, I’ve got a meeting with another payment provider next week to see if they have a better offering for us than Stripe. If they do not, then we continue on with Stripe, and my best guess is 8 - 12 weeks. This comes with a very heavy disclaimer though that I can be off by a fair bit, and often am. If we change payment provider for it, then I just don’t know the impact yet.

  1. Are custom fields in patient information something that will be happening soon so we can record different bits of information such as NDIS number, How the client is managed etc?.

We did begin work on it, then it got shelved for other higher priority tasks. I am not sure right now when we will return to it, but it is high on our priority list. I couldn’t give any idea on timeframe now.

  1. and Finally… What does it take from your guys perspective to make cliniko 2-way sync payments, invoices and changes between Xero and Cliniko, similar to the way Tradegecko and DEAR Systems do? Essentially what is involved and will this ever be supported?

I don’t know. We haven’t considered it at this stage. I don’t know what’s involved in doing so, how much effort, etc. I also don’t know if it would be important enough for many customers to get priority over other things.

Please let me know if you have anything else, I know you’re keen on timeframes for things, but our development priorities can and do change regularly, so unless something is underway and close to completion, it’s very hard for me to know if and when it will be released.

Thanks for coming across to Cliniko!

For the medical history, if you have an initial consultation treatment note that you use to gather this information, you can then “pin” that note to the top, so it’s always the first treatment note in your list. It’s then there while you’re typing your notes, without needing to go to another tab. Does that do what you need?

Also when you go to a patients notes and say go to their invoice history when you go back it doesn’t stay on that patient you are ok so that’s a bit annoying.

I don’t quite follow. If you can provide more details that would be great. What are you clicking, which pages exactly?

When you open up the patient details with the options to book an appointment or go to notes, payment etc it would be good to have the patients date of birth on this screen too so it can be checked.

I’ll look into that, it makes sense.

When you search for a patientvthe first line of address coming up would be helpful as you often know where a patient lives but you don’t know their date of birth and people don’t like to be asked their date of birth all the time.

Again I agree!

Thanks for the questions.

We’ve had this request quite a few times now, so I’d say likely we will do it. We don’t have any current plans for this though, so although it’s likely to happen at some point, I’d guess quite a while away still.

Are there any plans for integration with HICAPS or Tyro? This is a major consideration for me. I love Cliniko but I’m seriously considering a move to Genie just to allow integration with a payment system.

I’m a specialist. I love cliniko but I know other specialists prefer Genie for a couple of reasons including an ability to write prescriptions. For me , as I’ve said below, the lack of integration with our payment system (hicaps or tyro) is starting to become problematic as our clinic has expanded.

Are there any plans to make it easier to have child patients? There is currently no way of having a field for a parent contact, email addressed to parent, invoice to parent (without retyping the invoice address), school name, etc. As children make up quite a big part of the population this does seem a little strange!

Hi Abi,

I do know that we have a few things that might make life a little easier…

You can create a relationship between patients using “Related patients” - https://help.cliniko.com/en/articles/1024123-relate-patients-to-one-another
Also, you can send an invoice to the parent/guardian for a child patient using “Email an invoice to a third-party” - https://help.cliniko.com/en/articles/1023917-email-an-invoice-to-third-party

I’ll let Joel answer around changes…

Hi Joel…

Thanks for opening up this thread…

Can we please have a confirmed button rather than ‘arrived’ or in addition to? (post the SMS reminders going out?)

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply. I run a practice for children so the parents aren’t patients and therefore don’t have their own file. I usually add the parent name in the emergency contact field but I can often have mobile/email addresses for both parents so it’s not easy to find where to put the information.

I do try to add the parent as the third party to invoice but this involves retyping the address which takes time and often doesn’t get done so I need to change the name on each individual invoice when I issue them.

Overall I love Cliniko but there are a few things about working with kids that aren’t quite smooth yet.

Abi

Love Cliniko for its simplicity. Lack of integration with HICAPS and Medicare without using third parties is one of the main considerations for our psychologists in considering whether to stay with Cliniko or move to HealthKit.

HI Joel,
I started to use cliniko for many years when we were only 5 in the practice. Now we are growing and we change price plan on cliniko over the years. No we have about 12 practioners and would need to have more. ( for example if i take extra practitioner or even hiring a new one) unfortunately your price plan after 12 practitioner jumps from 13 to 25 which cost 70£ more per month. So has practices grow slowly, once you reach this point cliniko start to no be worth it pricewise and i am starting to think about moving to another management software for this only reason. Do you think it would be possible to have a new plan for example for 13 to 19 or else so there is a shorter price gape. Because paying £70 more per month just to hire one more practitioner is too high.
Thanks for this discussion and congratulations for Cliniko

Any developments for a proper APP for iPhone/Android/Phone and Tablets? The current way via the website on the phone’s ‘desktop’ is not as flexible, needs signing in and restating certain settings (such as number of days in workweek) and so on. Would be much easier to have an App for this as much more flexible. As an independent/small practise, this is really important to have as it saves time.

Hi Joel,

I have a number of practitioners working with me and most of them work across two locations.

In Cliniko settings I’d like to have my practitioners as each “business” rather than the location. But I then need a way to let the client know where their appointment would be within the automated email.
Any ideas?
